Outlaws head to Lowell for rematch with the Buzzards.
Both of these teams are trying to find out just who they are and neither has much time to figure it out. Springfield has found themselves in a must win situation early in this 2009 campaign. The 1-2 Buzzards are sitting tied for 5th and only the top four get invited to the playoffs. A loss this weekend would create a situation where the Buzz would need to win out and get some help from others. Although the Outlaws are 2-1 they have been fairly inconsistent and are looking to get the train back on the tracks. If these two teams first meeting is an indicator this match up should be a barn burner, somebody better call the fire department.
Buzzards trump Outlaws in the final seconds 30- 26.
The Outlaws came out swinging and took their opening possession right down the field for pay dirt on a big Kenny Washington TD run. The Outlaws converted the 2 point and took an early 8-0 advantage. After a big Outlaw fumble the Dirty Birds responded with a 33 yard score by Rashane Jackson and a 2 point conversion of their own tying the ball game 8-8 early in the 2nd. After another key stop the Birds offense kept the ball rolling with another Jackson TD run and a 2 point conversion taking a 16-8 lead. The Outlaws again put another TD drive together but couldn't convert the PAT leaving the Buzzards with a 16-14 advantage with just over 2 minutes left in the half. It wouldn't take Springfield long to score when Ryan Rux took the ensuing kickoff to the house with the play of the night on a night of many great plays. Ryan started right cutback and left everybody in the dust on his way to the end zone. The Buzzards held a 22-14 halftime lead. The Outlaws opened the 2nd half with a fine return of their own and another quick K-Dub TD cutting the lead to 22-20. The Outlaws put together another big drive, eating up clock and taking the lead back on a halfback toss pass from Kenny Washington to Chris DuPont on 4th and goal from the 4 yard line with just inches to spare. After forcing another Outlaw fumble the Buzzards scored on a Brandon Parks to Travis Ratliff TD strike to take back the lead 30-26. The Dirty D stood firm and the Buzzards O put together a wonderful drive deep into Outlaw territory where the drive stalled and the Outlaws took over with about 2 minutes left. Led by the passing of Phil DuPont the Outlaws mounted a furious comeback with three strikes to his brother Chris and a nice little fullback screen to Rhino Davidson and the Outlaws found themselves knocking on the door with a 1st and 10 at the Buzzard 17. This is when the Dirty D stepped up and denied the Outlaws on four straight incompletion and sealing the victory for the Birds. This was a great night of football, both teams swinging it out and making plays on both sides of the ball, we saw 5 lead changes, two 30 yard plus td runs, a half back toss pass for a td, a kick return for a td, a furious final drive and a defensive stand to ice the game in the waning seconds.
At the halfway point in the 2009 season both the Buzzards and Outlaws are 2-2 and in the middle of the playoff hunt in the OFL. After a much needed league bye week the Buzzards will travel North to Milwaukie to challenge the league leading 4-0 Portland Monarchs on April 18th. The Buzzards will then come home to Lowell to host the Umpqua Valley Knights on April 25th followed by another Lowell home game against the High Desert Lightning on May 2nd and then a road trip up to Vancouver to take on the Vipers on May 9th. If you haven't caught a game yet do yourself a favor and come out and support your Buzzards.
To us "Dirty" is a style of play that we embrace. It's a little swagger. It's about fast paced, bone rattling hard hits. Dirty is about doing things the right way, goal setting, commitment and hard work. It's about a group of men working together for the common good of the team. Dirty has my back and I've got his. It's clean and mean football, the way Papa Bear Halas intended.
